Talk to Quote: say the job on site, send an estimate in your own numbers

An estimating app for contractors: describe the job once on site, check what it heard, and send an estimate priced from your own price book, with every rate you have not set yet marked as an estimate.

the design prototype runs live on this site, every screen tappable; the app is in build with its engine under test; every figure shown is the prototype's sample and says so.

The Talk to Quote jobs screen in a phone: every job with a coloured light and a word under its name, the estimate range beside it, the price book's count below, and the Talk button.
Every job on one list, with a light and a word: red when something needed is missing, yellow when it is your move, green when it is sent. Captured from the running prototype.

A look inside

The Talk screen: the words of the take as they are heard, the waveform, the timer, and Pause, Stop and Type.

Step 1 of 10

1. Say the job. Describe it once; the words arrive as they are heard. Take a second take later, or type it.

The work

  1. Stage: points

    The problem

Field estimates die between the job site and the desk. The details live in a contractor's head at the end of the visit and in nothing by the evening, and the quote goes out late or not at all. The numbers it is priced with are someone else's unless he has typed every one.

  2. Stage: connections

    What we built

A job-centric phone app: jobs with a light and a word each, notes, photos, what was agreed on site, and a history nothing can be edited out of. A quote flow of talk, check, estimate: as many takes as the job needs, every spec it heard shown beside the words it came from, anything it filled in marked assumed until confirmed. The model reads; the code prices, line by line, from the contractor's own price book, and every rate he has not set yet prints with a mark on the screen, the PDF and the customer's copy. Versions, a ballpark, his copy and the customer's, and what each part cost against the estimate once the job is done.

  3. Stage: resolved

    The result

The app is in build on its own branch, with a self-serve price book that starts from regional estimates and becomes the contractor's as he sets rates, changes lines or imports a supplier's price list. The design prototype runs live on this site's Talk to Quote page, where every screen can be tapped through. Early access is open.

Evidence at a glance

  • say the job once, check it, send it
  • every rate not yours marked, everywhere
  • the model reads, the code prices
  • a record nothing can be edited out of
